The South Island of New Zealand is renowned for its natural beauty. This is evident in the multi award winning Lord of the Rings movie which was filmed in New Zealand. The climate in the South Island is generally a cool temperate. In Christchurch the summer temperatures range from 22 degrees C during the day to 12 degrees C overnight. Winter temperatures range from 11 degrees during the day to as low as 1 degree C overnight. Of course the alpine regions of Queenstown, Wanaka and Mount Cook experience much lower winter temperatures with fantastic skiing areas for all of the winter months.
